LO1 - Mr Happy Short Film

Mr Happy - Short Film

Camera Work

At 2:14 the camera pans around showing the entire room that the main character lives in. this helps show the audience that the main protaganist within this film is living quite a run down life. This helps the audience feel sorry for the main character. Also within this film we get a lod of middle shots of the main character this is an important part of the narrative due to the fact that this film heavily relies on the use of the main characters lack of confidence this is shown at 2:02. At 7:49 there is a close up of the main charcters face this helps show the audience thefact he is heavily contemplating what has happened in his life to get him to this point, and a possible  moment of doubt which could be showing some foreshaowing mto future events.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene of Mr Happy short film denotes the ability to end your life by simply using a computer program that has a service on it that will pay someone to kill you in a number of different ways. The use of the gun prop is very important in this film and instantly carries the message of death and that the end is very near for the main character. The audience the audience will also pick up on the fact that the narrative for this is about to reveal a plot twist due to the fact that the only possible holder for the gun is infact the girl that the main character is taking out for a Valentines trip. The audience also get to see that the main character go through a tough time, to create an ideological response from the audience that is empathy. The mise-en-scene immediately connotes to the audience that the film will involve a suicidal character , with the plastic bag prop that he pulls over his face to kill himself in the first scene of this film and we immediatly pick this point up. The use of the art gallery as one of the locations uses ideology to show that the girl is actually good at art, with her paintings actually showing her previous victims, painted in the way that she kills them.  But the character development within this film shows that the character you think is real, is intact not really who she says she is and her little joke about someone getting chopped up was actually her own little sick sense of humour. The message that you can get from this is that when a person kills themself no matter what it is the end, and that a person coontemplating suicide should get help as life can become better but by ending it you are preventing your future from coming in and things even getting better. The audience throughout this entire film believe that the the blonde haired girl is attracted to the protagonist, but really she is out to kill the protagonist in a peacful way, the way that he earlier arranged via the Mr Happy website. The film trailer uses a concentrated amount of low-key and natural lighting in order to make the audience feel more on edge when watching this short film, almost trying to make them anticipate the fact everything is not how it seems throughout the film. It also adds to the short film looking more realistic, which creates verisimilitude. The producer of Mr Happy wants us to understand how ending it all shouldnt ever be an option but also how it is very important issue and shouldn't be dismissed just because it isn't a physical problem this is the preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980). I would also say that a preferred reading of this film for this film involves how important it is for us to support each other as humans due to the fact that the the protagonists only friend has no real regard for how he actually feels and is a fairly terrible friend.  The title of the film is rather ironic due to the fact that the character isnt happy in the slightest.

Content and Meaning

The Mise en Scene within this has been encoded (everything has been purposefully placed) in a way that is meant to help create the preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980). The preferred reading of this short film can be interpreted as many different things. But I think the main thing this trailer is trying to connote that suicide should never be an option and that it is very possible for things to get easier and better. But by ending it all you will never find out. The way that the main character shakes a lot in this shows that he has been socially crushed possibly by the girl he is interested in is seeing someone else, and the way that his only friends appear to be those within a chatroom. It also seems to have a message of hope within it because things do proceed to get better for him, and . So matter how bleak things may seem this film shows that there is always hope, but unfortuantly Victors hope in this is taken away from him as he already killed himself.

Narrative

The narrative for this short film is in chronological order and is about a a man named Victor who is feeling rather suicidal, due to feeling lonely and rejected in society. Things taht have probably led him to have a lot of time to think and to contemplate what is wrong with him even though he is probably just socially retarded. Now Victor is too scared to kill himself and too nervous so he turns to the internet for help. By doing this he is led to a forum that has a link on it that leads to the website Mr Happy. On the surface Mr Happy seems like a happy place with whacky music and a jolly country voice in the background while the screen loads this helps make the whole scenario just feel that little bit more creepy and disturbing.

Editing

The editing within this is at a very decent level a prime example of this is at 13:00 where the girl and Victor are embracing eachother in a drunken haze the editing on this is well done wiht scenes of a low opacity fading in and out of eachother which helps emphasise the element of a drunken haze.. This is rather badly done, but I am not sure on an alternative possibly making her fade at all angles resulting in her imploding at the centre rather than a basic swipe towards her traveling up her body. There are a fair amounts of cuts within this to help sequence the events together in a way that seems/ feels rather seamless, this makes it easier for the audience to immerse themselves within this short film.

LO1 - The Web Short Film

The Web - Short Film

Camera Work

At 2:36 there is a crowd shot, this helps show the angry mobs that have gathered in the streets due to the end of the world, this help connote urgency with the main narrative within this film. At the start of this short film we are given several establishing shots to help show that this film is set in Hollywood. At 0:11 seconds a shallow depth of field is used, this connotes to the audience the fact that what the person is saying is fairly important and is something that the audience should pay attention to due to the fact that a short film every second is fairly vital.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene of The Web short film denotes items such as computers and hacking devices which are attached to the hacker Kip. This instantly creates the theme of escape and helps the audience to understand that the characters are intelligent and with the narrative playing out you get to see that the main characters are protagonist within this, to create an ideological response from the audience. The mise-en-scene immediately connotes to the audience that the film will involve characters who are hackers and are part of an underground organisation that is off the radar due to them having to throw the police officer off the scent for the case. The use of the shop as the location uses ideology to show to the audience that the short film is based around characters who on the surface are normal people, but the character development within this film shows them turn into hackers the computer at eh back of the store helps to reinforce this idea. The film trailer uses a concentrated amount of low-key and natural lighting in order to make the audience feel more on edge when watching this short film. It also adds to the short film looking more realistic, which creates verisimilitude. The producer of The Web Nathan Fielder wants us to understand that friendship and teamwork is very important during tough situations and that a problem shared is a problem halved And that it is our instinct to survive which affect the way we react to the situations around us, this is the preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980). I would also say that a preferred reading of this film for this film involves how important it is for us to support each other as humans due to the fact that towards the end Nathan has to convince Kip that he should hack into the astroid.  The title of the film confirms that the film is based on the characters hacking because when they are in imminent danger they manage to stay alive, by working together and hacking into an astroid.

Content and Meaning

The Mise en Scene within this has been encoded (everything has been purposefully placed) in a way that is meant to help create the preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980). The preferred reading of this film can be interpreted as many different things. But I think the main thing this trailer is trying to connote is working together as a group you can achieve a lot,  within this film there is a lot of team work. Nathan helping throw officer Suzanne off the case, while Kip hacks into the astroid helps show this team work. It also seems to have a message of hope within it because Bill Gates appear to believe everything has been lost and that he has ended the world, but out of no where Kip helps solve the problem. So matter how bleak things may seem this film shows that there is always hope.

Narrative

The narrative for this short film is in chronological order and is about a hacker named Kip (Ronnie Rodriguez) who has to hack into an astroid that is on a straight trajectory to earth. The reason being Bill Gates (William) has a microchip within the astroid and he has lost control of it, if all goes wrong the world will end. The film has several narratives going on in it including. Bill Gates having a breakdown, Nathan (Nathan Fielder) having to meet his girlfriend, and Officer Suzanne enquiring about the hacking investigation, another aspect to this film are several people going to the souvenir shop to buy souvenirs so they remember the earth.

Script

The script for this award winning film was written by Nathan Fielder and has no continuity errors. The script is filled with some cliches such as "I'm a hacker not a slacker". But the script writing for this film does establish the plot and helps the narrative come across in a clear streamline manner, with each part enhancing the story or giving insight to the characters which in turn helps add to the story that is being told

Editing

Editing is used throughout this entire film. With quick cuts at the start of the film that are all about establishing where the film is set, and by adding the text that is at the bottom left hand corner of the shot at 0:06 seconds in also helps to show this and back up the meaning that they are going for on this.

Production Values

The production values within this film are to a fairly decent standard throughout the entire film. There aren't any continuity errors and the sound is to a fairly high standard with the music from the start seamlessly fading out. With quite a few quick cuts in the intro of this seems to establish the scene. The one production value error I would say that there is during this film is from the actor who plays officer Suzanne and appears to forget her lines before there is a quick cut to her, this might not be noticeable from a first time viewing but after watching his multiple times it is certainly something that I have picked up on during this film.

LO1 - H A L L U C I N A T I O N Short Film

H A L L U C I N A T I O N - Short Film

Camera Work

The camera work at 0:03 is a shallow depth of field before turning into a deeper depth of field, putting the object fully in focus. Considering this film is only 2:55 they have tried to make it look as professional as possible, and showcasing the skill of things going in to this production also by this intro of panning with things going in and out of focus does show to the viewer that this film is technically good but also well thought out. Also at 2:10 there is a close up of one of the unnamed characters face, this makes the audience see the emotion that is distress in the characters face. This is an easy way to transport emotion into the audience who are viewing this.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene of H A L L U C I N A T I O N short film denotes pills and medication which are attached to the main character within this. This instantly creates the message that this film is about mental illness the audience the audience will also pick up on the fact that the narrative for this is about mental  illness due to the fact that a lot of it is set in a waiting room for a doctors. The audience also get to see that the main character go through a tough time, to create an ideological response from the audience that is education and empathy. The mise-en-scene immediately connotes to the audience that the film will involve characters who have a mental illness and are part of the same story, with one o them being a vision that is haunting the other. The use of the doctors waiting room as the location uses ideology to show to the audience that the short film is based around characters are ill in some  way, but the character development within this film shows that the character you think is real, is intact not really there. The message that you can get from this is when you are mentally ill, the illness is very real and should be taken seriously. The audience throughout this entire film believe that the real version is the blonde haired girl, but we feel like we have a greater understanding of mental illness when we find out it is the brunette. The film trailer uses a concentrated amount of low-key and natural lighting in order to make the audience feel more on edge when watching this short film. It also adds to the short film looking more realistic, which creates verisimilitude. The producer of H A L L U C I N A T I O N wants us to understand how distressing mental illness can be and how it is very important and shouldn't be dismissed just because it isn't a physical problem this is the preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980). I would also say that a preferred reading of this film for this film involves how important it is for us to support each other as humans due to the fact that the girl seems alone throughout the film which probably would make things worse.  The title of the film confirms that the film might not be everything that it seems to be on a surface level.

Content and Meaning

The Mise en Scene within this has been encoded (everything has been purposefully placed) in a way that is meant to help create the preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980). The preferred reading of this film can be interpreted as many different things. But I think the main thing this short film is trying to connote that mental help is something that society might have to look at harder. The way that the girl seems troubled and hears voices does show how troublesome that her mental illness actually is. It also seems to have a message of hope within it because the pills help to reveal what is real, and what isn't. So matter how bleak things may seem this film shows that there is always hope.

Narrative

The narrative for this short film is in chronological order and is about a woman who has a mental illness and is struggling to work out what is real. There is another character we see who we are led to believe that there is a girl that is merely a hallucination following her. The film has several key milestones within it including. The girl getting her pills, the girl seeing her hallucination and the girl struggling to consume the pills, before we realise that she is the hallucination, or possibly the mental illness has fully consumed her.

Script

The script for H A L L U C I N A T I O N has no continuity errors and follows a very carefully written narrative with a slight plot twist at the end which is rather impressive considering the short run time of 2:55 seconds. The script is well written, where i imagine they would have to write about how the pill scenes will require narration, which has been executed in such a way that is rather effective and some viewers may find rather intense as it instantly draws the viewer into the story world due to how unavoidable this part is.

Editing

The editing within this is rather tacky at times as prime example of this is at 2:12 where the girl slowly fades out to reveal she is the hallucination.

Production Values

The production values within this film are to a fairly decent standard throughout the entire film. There aren't any continuity errors and the sound is to a fairly high standard with the voice echoing, taking full advantage of the use of stereo speakers as the voice transfers between each earphone. There are quite a few . There are no parts within the film that are flawed from the aspect of creating the film without any errors.
